In October our annual coach excursion took us to Chatham Dockyard where we enjoyed a full day looking at the historic ships, buildings and the submarine, amongst other things.
Chatham Dockyard was a Royal Navy Dockyard located on the River Medway in Kent. Established in Chatham in the mid-16th century, the dockyard subsequently expanded into neighbouring Gillingham. At its most extensive two-thirds of the dockyard lay in Gillingham, one-third in Chatham.
One of the highlights was a tour of the Ropery including a demonstration of the manufacture of the different grades of rope used in both shipping and other industries.
Our thanks to Rosy Stone for organising the trip
